Level

Overview

Experience the passion and adrenaline of the first week of LA VUELTA during its time in the Netherlands.

It is now official that LA VUELTA 2020 will start outside Spain, taking off for the second time in Holland, this will be only the fourth time the race starts from a different country, since Lisbon and Nimes had the honor to host the departure of the race in 1997 and 2017.

Utrecht is the chosen city to kick off the Spanish race, being a classic in the cycling world and a consolidated city within the Netherlands as the nerve center of national cycling. In 2020 Utrecht will become the only city to have hosted stages of the three great competitions of the UCI World Tour (Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta de España).

Nothing like pedaling on the same roads where the professionals pass by a few hours later and enjoying access to the VIP area to see the end of every stage from the best place. With front-row seats at the finish line in the exclusive VIP area, all you need to do is sit back and relax with a glass of champagne in your hand and wait for the excitement as professionals arrive.

As one of the four Official Tour Operators of the Vuelta de España, Bike Spain Tours offers a spectacular cyclist trip that captures the beauty of the routes, the highlights of the race and provides an exciting ride. The relaxed atmosphere and the access to professional cyclists and their teams during the Vuelta turn this trip into a very special experience. Accommodation in 4-star luxury hotels in the heart of Utrecht & Breda, VIP access to the race areas and tailor-made bike rides with logistical support at all times in addition to the presence of our trilingual (Dutch, English, Spanish) experienced guides, we can guarantee that it will be one of the trips of your life!

Those who want to join this very different race start, will enjoy a trip of 7 days and three stages:

Itinerary

Day 1: Wednesday, August 12th: Utrecht
Arrival Day
Accomodation: Apollo Hotel Utrecht City Centre

Arrival in Utrecht at leisure. The hotel for our first four nights is located in the downtown area of this lively city (sometimes called “small Amsterdam”), just a few steps from the bustling and recently renovated Utrecht Central Station. Check-in is possible from 14.30/15.00

The province of Utrecht is an attractive cycling region with 1800 km of bicycle paths and lots of vegetation! It is no coincidence that the province of Utrecht is number 1 in the list of the most kilometers on a bicycle per year per inhabitant. Cycling in this area is a unique experience: it has more castles, estates and country estates than in the French Loire region!

The city of Utrecht has a figure that surprises many people from abroad: every inhabitant of the city has on average two or more bicycles. When you look around the city, you see them all over. Firmly chained to poles and bridges, parked in bicycle sheds and deftly heading on the many bicycle paths. Utrecht was the first municipality to have a bicycle path as early as 1885 and now has the largest bicycle shed in the world: for no fewer than 33,000 two-wheelers! Utrecht is a lively city and offers an impressive and pleasant mix of timeless history and contemporary appeal. In this city you will find history (among others it is known for the Peace of Utrecht treaties), culture and creativity alongside exciting design shops and authentic restaurants.

Today we’ll do some bike fitting and we’ll present the route and our team to you during the first dinner in the center of the city.

Day 2: Thrusday, August 13th: Utrecht

Bike Ride: first part of second stage

Accomodation: Apollo Hotel Utrecht City Centre

Today we’ll take a sneak preview of the first part of the route the pros are facing during the second stage of the Vuelta. While they will be cycling on Saturday from Den Bosch (capital of the province of Noord-Brabant) to Utrecht, we’ll do half of this stage in the opposite direction, giving us the chance to visit the vibrant city of Den Bosch, after having cycled through the typical Dutch river landscape, where the rivers sometimes flow slightly above the land…!

The province of Noord-Brabant is the province of Vincent Van Gogh and the cradle of Dutch Design. Noord-Brabant is blessed with cities full of character, award-winning theme parks and vibrant events. This beautiful region is known for its Burgundian coziness and has something to offer to everyone. Furthermore, the Brabant landscape encourages walking, cycling, horseback riding and even more. Beautiful nature reserves and forests are ideal for long walks or relaxing cycling events. Noord-Brabant has the longest integrated cycling network in Europe, so that should not be an obstacle to getting to ride your bike!

As a city of data, s-Hertogenbosch (commonly known as Den Bosch) is in full motion! Even with bikes! The city shows its innovative and sustainable character with two special applications for cyclists that were created in cooperation with the local business community. The apps bring cyclists to their destinations faster and safer by, for example, warning them of difficult situations. A unique feature is the Schwungapp, which allows traffic lights to ‘see’ cyclists approaching, allowing the light to go green. In this way, the municipality stimulates (safe) cycling in the sustainable mobility policy of Den Bosch.

Den Bosch is the capital of Noord-Brabant, which is characterized by its Burgundian hospitality. The city, known as the cultural city of the south, has a lot to offer with beautiful museums (for example, the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center) and the most exciting festivals. Art, gastronomy and special shopping in a historical setting are in opposition to the innovative character of the city.

This afternoon, we’ll have some time to discover this beautiful city at our own pace and we’ll meet up for dinner before bringing you back to our hotel in Utrecht.

Day 3: Friday, August 14th: Utrecht
Bike ride around the city & along the circuit before the pros
Stage:
https://www.lavueltaholanda.com/en/stage-1-utrecht-utrecht

Accomodation: Apollo Hotel Utrecht City Centre

We’ll start this D-Day of La Vuelta with a leisurely and short ride around the city of Utrecht, before coming back to the hotel for a lunch on our own. Then we’ll meet up again to try part of the circuit before the pros do, starting later today for their first stage (time trial). We’ll watch them race by from our VIP-places at the finish line area!

Tonight, we will all have dinner on our own.

Day 4: Saturday, August 15th: Utrecht
Second part of second stage and finish line at VIP area
Stage: https://www.lavueltaholanda.com/en/stage-2-s-hertogenbosch-utrecht/

Accomodation: Apollo Hotel Breda City Centre

Pack your bags because it’s time to switch hotels and city, since we’ll start tomorrow, like the pros will, in the beautiful historical city of Breda.
But before that, the Vuelta’s second stage will take the cyclists from the city of Den Bosch back to Utrecht. While we discovered the first part of this stage two days ago, today we’ll see the variety of landscape in the second part of this stage, climbing some small hills and riding through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. We’ll be back in time to see the pros finish in Utrecht on our last afternoon in this city. After the finish, we’ll bring you to Breda for tomorrow’s stage from / to there.

Tonight, we will all have dinner on our own.

Day 5: Sunday, August 16th: Breda
Bike ride (first part of third stage) and VIP finish line
Stage:
https://www.lavueltaholanda.com/en/stage-3-breda-breda/

Accomodation: Apollo Hotel Breda City Centre

Today’s stage will start AND end in Breda and we will cycle the first part of this stage just before the pros pass by. It will take us through a varied landscape of open agricultural fields and dots of forest, passing through some of the villages that are considered the cradle of Dutch cycling. Again, we’ll be back in Breda to see the pros finish at our VIP area!

In Breda, you will find both urban and international allure and at the same time inspiring tranquility in the landscape and a feeling of seclusion in traditional villages. The Mastbos, the Markdal, the Galderse Heide, the Liesbos, the Ulvenhoutse woods, country estates and natural gates embrace Breda with lots of greenery, which runs along bicycle paths from all directions to parks far into the city centre.

It was not a coincidence that King Willem Alexander’s ancestors lived in Breda for 150 years since they chose this ‘northernmost Flemish city’ about six centuries ago. They made history there – partly coinciding with that of Spain – and left behind beautiful monuments. The Castle of Breda, the Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwenkerk and the Beguinage are still ‘top’ in the historic city centre.

The combination with leading, contemporary architecture, musical events, cultural festivals, extensive digital cleverness and hospitable get-togethers, makes Breda the Best City Centre of the Netherlands. Sport is inextricably bound up with the Breda lifestyle, where cycling is at the top of the list. All kinds of cycling clubs, from semi-professionals, friends, both male and female, to pubbars and cycling enthusiasts find their place in Breda. And after exercising it’s wonderful to relax and enjoy yourself.

Tonight, we will all have dinner on our own.

Day 6: Monday, August 17th: Breda.

Bike ride (second part of third stage)

Accomodation: Apollo Hotel Breda City Centre

On our last cycling day, we’ll enjoy the second part of yesterday’s last stage of the Vuelta in the Netherlands. This time we’ll cycle over the Brabantse Wal in West-Brabant and have some leisurely stops in the different picturesque villages along the way.

Day 7: Wednesday, August 18th: Breda
Departure day

After the breakfast, our services end. Today is at leisure. The Bike Spain guides will be available to help you with your travel plans and with any other details so that you have a happy trip back home!
