Our first route begins with some beautiful cycling through the vineyards of the Alt Empordà, passing through wine towns such as Garriguella, where we’ll find the oldest groves, and Vilajuïga, famous for its natural mineral water and historic dolmens, with the distant Pyrenees as a constant backdrop.
After Vilajuïga, comes today’s star attraction: a stunning route around the windswept peninsula of Cap de Creus! We’ll begin with a challenging ascent up to the hilltop abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes, which dates back to the 9th century, before enjoying a smooth downhill ride into Port de la Selva, a whitewashed fishing village framed by hills.
Next, we’ll climb Sa Perafita before enjoying a thrilling descent into Cadaqués: steep, technical, and flanked by stark granite hills that suddenly give way to a view of the town nestled against a sparkling bay. Cadaqués is a charming fishing port made famous for its association with Catalan painter Dalí.
From Cadaqués, we’ll continue east toward Far del Cap de Creus, a lighthouse perched on the edge of the world. The road narrows and becomes rougher, but the views are epic — jagged cliffs, crystalline coves, and windswept headlands.
Our return to Peralada takes us back through the Parc Natural de Cap de Creus, a landscape of dry stone walls, wile rosemary and wind-sculpted pines.

The big day has come: it’s time for La Vuelta’s very first stage in Spain!
From Peralada, we’ll head north through gentle agricultural landscapes toward Espolla, skirting the base of the Albera mountain range, passing stone farmhouses and dry-stone terraces—typical of this ancient wine-growing region. We’ll pass through a number of sleepy mountian hamlets, with views of the Pyrenees growing more prominent on the horizon.
The ride continues through cork oak forests and tranquil, shaded lanes, before descending into Biure and offering a refreshing change in landscape as we leave the hills behind and roll into open fields dotted with fruit trees and old masias.
Next, we’ll arrive into the charming city of Figueres, capital of the Alt Empordà and known as the home of Catalan genius Salvador Dalí. Today, Figueres will play host to La Vuelta 2025’s very first time trial! We’ll test our own pace by cycling the stage ourselves, before heading to the VIP area to cheer on our favourites as they cycle the very same route!
In the afternoon, we’ll spend some time exploring Figueres. The city boasts a charismatic and diverse architectural heritage, from the medieval city walls to the modernist and neo-classical structures around La Rambla.

From here, the route winds eastward along quiet roads through lush alpine villages, offering peaceful countryside and sweeping Pyrenean views. After climbing gently to Laspaúles, the route threads through the rugged beauty of Bisarri and descends into the Benasque Valley.
From here, the climb resumes through picturesque mountain villages to Eriste, where the valley narrows and the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. As you reach Benasque, the alpine character of the region takes over: stone buildings, glacial peaks, and crisp mountain air.
