In many ways a nation unto itself – proud, independent and rich with heritage – Catalonia is the land of Picasso, Dalí and Gaudí, who clearly drew inspiration from the strong culture and stunning surroundings that define this landscape: from the towering Pyrenees to volcanic flats, rolling pastoral hills and rugged Costa Brava.
Each day of biking in this region offers a medley of dramatic vistas, sparkling coastlines and rolling plains. Spin through charming medieval villages, stop to visit an artisinal pottery workshop in La Bisbal, visit exclusive boutique wineries and sample some of the best cuisine the area has to offer. At the the confluence of Spanish and French culinary traditions, the Costa Brava is home to some of the most renowned cuisine in the world.
Day 1: Arrival from Barcelona
Route: 23 – 43 km
Accommodation: Mas Falgarona
After meeting with your Bike Spain guides at your hotel in Barcelona you will transfer by van north from the city into the heart of the Alt-Emporda region of Catalonia. Starting your bike ride in the Garrotxa Natural Park, which embraces at least forty dormant volcanos, you will begin your week of riding on a tranquil road through the park to the beautiful medieval town of Banyoles for lunch in the town’s historic medieval centre.
After lunch you can chose to bike a bit further or transfer directly back to the hotel to enjoy some time downtime on the peaceful grounds of your boutique hotel, Mas Falgarona, before enjoying a gourmet dinner by the pool this evening.
Day 2: Alt Emporda
Route: 30 – 40 km
Accommodation: Mas Falgarona
This morning’s ride is a foray into the Alt Emporda, a region with borders of both geographical and political significance, nestled between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. The tranquility of the rolling fields punctuated by the occasional masia (the traditional Catalan farmhouse) and its proximity to the coast attract city folk from Barcelona when they are ready to escape to the countryside. This area is gaining a great reputation for its hearty red wines and we will pass some notable wineries along the way.
Following lunch, we will make our way back to the hotel for a quick refresh before making our way into Figueres for an illuminating guided tour of the fascinating Dali theatre museum.
Day 3: Baix Emporda
Route: 52 km
Accommodation: Mas de Torrent
Leaving the area of the Alt Emporda we make our way down towards the southern part of the province, the Baix Emporda or Lower Emporda. Our bike ride from the hotel takes us through rolling, bucolic terrain surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. We pass through many charming, small towns, stopping along the way for a hearty local lunch before arriving on the luxurious grounds of our 5-star lodgings for the next 2 nights, Mas de Torrent.
Dinner tonight is on the terrace of the hotel’s atmospheric restaurant.
Day 4: Baix Emporda
Route: 40 – 50km
Accommodation: Mas de Torrent
Today our ride takes us into the cultural heartland of Catalonia to discover some of the charming medieval villages that pepper the lands between Girona and the coast. We’ll spin through La Bisbal and Madremanya as well as Pubol, where you can visit Castell Gala-Dali, the castle Dali bought just for his wife Gala to live in.
Towards the end of the ride we arrive in the town of Ullastret for a well-deserved lunch on the charming terrace of the excellent Iberic restaurant. Depending on how you feel after lunch, you can opt to return to the hotel to relax by the pool or in the spa or to visit some exceptional ceramics workshops in the town of Bisbal.
Day 5: Palamos
Route: approx 30 km
Accommodation: Parador Aiguabrava
Today we’ll start with a spin through the town of La Bisbal before beginning a climb to la Col de la Ganga. Then it’s time to relax and revel in an exhilarating cruise downhill towards the fishing town of Palamos. After arriving at the seafront we make our way towards a private wine estate for a hands-on cooking class before sitting down to enjoy the fruits of our labour and the stunning views from the beautiful terrace of the estate.
Afterwards you can take a dip in the pool on the estate or make your way back to our final hotel, the small and charming 5-star property of La Malcontenta.
Day 6: Departure
It´s time to say goodbye after an exciting trip, whose memories will accompany us on our journey home and hopefully encourage us to return to Spain again in the future!
Your Bike Spain guides will transfer you to Barcelona airport for your onward journey. If you would like to extend your stay to include some extra nights in the region, we will be more than happy to arrange this for you!
