On this tour we will discover the best of the Basque Country between Spain and France with an incredible combination of the inland and the coast as well as the architectural differences between the two cultures.
This bike tour is a great way to enjoy the countryside and the coast of the Basque Country. Enjoy a ride by the sea, discovering the wonderful beaches, enjoying beautiful landscapes and visiting the charming fishing villages that seem straight out of a fairy tale.
The itinerary also includes the beautiful city of San Sebastian for two nights. San Sebastian is a small city but world famous as a destination for gastronomic tourism, as it collects more Michelin stars per square meter of its territory than anywhere else in the world. It is also the birthplace of the “new Basque cuisine” movement. The quality of its ingredients and its famous “pintxos” give much pleasure to both locals and visitors throughout the year. The beauty of its bay, known as the Pearl of the Bay of Biscay, its location in a natural amphitheater facing the sea and protected by the mountains and its quality of life, have turned it into a first class tourist destination in the last two centuries.
Day 1: San Sebastian
Accommodation: Hotel Codina
Arrival in San Sebastian today is at leisure. Take the evening to explore the city centre and the spectacular shell-shaped beach of La Concha, which is just minutes walking distance from your hotel. We recommend you stroll around and try the famous ‘pintxos’ or “tapas”in any of the local bars of the area. ‘Pintxo‘ is a ‘Basque-ified’ take on the Spanish word ‘pincho. They are small finger foods served at bars and taverns throughout the Basque Country. Their are the backbone of the Basque food culture.
Day 2: San Sebastian – Hondarribia
Route: 25 km

This morning you will meet with our local partner Miguel in the lobby of your hotel for the bike fitting. He will help with your bikes and give you the maps and documents you need for the week. Leaving from San Sebastian by bike, will take us to the old and charming fishing village of Pasajes San Juan, which we will access by boat. Ascent by road to Jaizkibel Mountain pass (500 meters approx.) Descend to the fortified town of Hondarribia. Last point before leaving Spain and crossing the river Bidasoa and to reach the Basque land in France. With stunning views of lush green landscapes will make your way while you are cycling.
The hotel tonight is a really nice hotel with Bidasoa river views, where the frontier between Spain and France is.
Day 3: Hondarribia – Bayona
Route: 45 km
Elevation: +560 m
Accommodation: Hotel Arceaux
After crossing the Bidasoa river, we take the bike paths next to the beach and you will ride in the coastal road, along the coast, called “La corniche”, towards the charming town of Saint Juan de Luz. You will visit this typically Basque town. You will continue along local roads and near the Basque coast crossing the villages of Guetary, Bidart reaching the glamour and nice town of Biarritz and finally Bayonne, The Capital of Basque French country.
Bayonne is a town characterized by the medieval style of its streets.
Tonight you will stay at the Hotel Des Arceaux, which is a fantastic base to see many of Bayonne’s attractions such as the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne.
Day 4: Bayona – Bera de Bidasoa
Route: 50 km
Elevation: +630 m
Accommodation: Hotel Churrut
Leaving Bayona in the morning, after breakfast, we will approch the Adour river , located in the north of the city. We will continue along the bicycle paths that runs parallel to the river until we will reach the point where we will take the inland road passing through the traditional Basque Villages and arriving to the charming villages of Ainhoa and Sare . You will follow the local road and crossing small basque-french villages near to the Pyrenne mountains. The views are incredible with all the green routes you pass through while pedaling towards the final location, passing the point of Lizuniaga downhill to the Navarra Village of Bera de Bidasoa.
Day 5: Bera de Bidasoa – San Sebastián
Route: 40 km
Elevation: +460 m
Accommodation: Hotel Codina
Today we cycle from Bera de Bidasoa to San Sebastián again, the last stage before finishing the trip. You willl take the Bidasoa Greenway that will take us to the border town of Irun. In this village we will take the path bike in order to pass through the Villa of Irun. Leaving this town behind, we will pass through Ventas neighborhood, and we will continueing along local road climbing The Gurutze pass mountain. After a small break, downhill to Oiartzuntown and come back to San Sebastián along bike path.
We will stay for the night in Hotel Codina again, same as the first night here.
Day 6: Departure
After breakfast, you will bid farwell to your bike and the beautiful Basque Countryside. Get in touch with us if you are interested in spending some extra nights in any of the cities around or extending your trip.
