Tucked away in the Basque Country of Spain is the small town of Kortezubi, which is home to the Oma Painted Forest. Kortezubi is located within the natural reserve of Urdaibai and has less than 500 inhabitants making the Oma Forest a true hidden gem. The forest is the most famous work of art by Basque painter and sculptor Agustín Ibarrola. In 1982 Ibarrola began work on the Oma Forest as part of the modern art trend of “Land art.” Visiting this unique “open air museum” where there is no entry charge involves going on a peaceful walk among pine trees and ferns. The trunks are transformed by the artist’s paintbrushes and he plays with point of view and depth by making mysterious compositions emerge out of the middle of nowhere! The painted forest represents the complex relationship between humans and nature. A stop at the Oma Painted Forest is a must on the Bike Spain Tour of the Basque Country!
