Overview

This tour offers, in only 4 days, a great view of some of the best routes of the area of Girona. The first ride allows you to follow the steps of some of the pro cyclists that live and train in Girona, a great challenge for those who like to challenge themselves.

The following rides are much more easy but not less interesting. The route to the coast, will lead you to one of most spectacular roads, that allows you to discover some of the pearls of the rough Costa Brava, with little coves and unspoilt settlements. More on the North, the last loop rides will take cyclists to an agricultural area, with plenty of medieval charming towns, worth visiting.

Ideal for those who love variety and like to combine different landscapes in few days: mountains, coast, agricultural fields and medieval settlements. All of this, combined with excellent Mediterranean food, and great moments in unique places.

Highlights

  • Visit Girona, where pro-cyclists live and train.
  • 3 great cycle days through a privileged zone.
  • Follow the rough Costa Brava coast.
  • Perfect cycle breakaway to combine with a visit in Barcelona.
  • Good roads and low traffic.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at the city of Girona
Accomodation: Hotel URH Girona

There is plenty to see and do in this magical historical city. Spend the day visiting the Cathedral, which has the broadest single nave of Gothic architecture in the world and getting lost through the narrow streets of the ancient Jewish quarter, one of the best preserved in the world. We also recommend a stroll along the Rambla or the medieval walls, which gives you a fantastic panoramic view of the city.

Day 2: Loop ride Girona – Sant Hilari Sacalm – Girona
Route: 92 km
Accomodation: Hotel URH Girona

Today provides riders with a chance to climb to over 1000m in altitude to the mountain town of Sant Hilari. The climb to the town is approx. 30km and is an excellent training climb with its slack gradients but long distance. Riders then have a thrilling 18km descent to the town of Santa Coloma. This is another famous training ride used by hundreds of local riders. The ride returns to Girona winding through the fantastic countryside of the Gironès area.

Day 3: Girona de Palafrugell
Route: 114 km
Accomodation: Hotel Sant Roc

This ride takes you to the Costa Brava, cycling through one of most beautiful roads of the territory, right in front of the Mediterranean Sea. We leave Girona and cycle towards the south: when we get to Tossa de Mar, we’ll be following the fantastic coast line until Calella de Palafrugell, an old fishing village which still retains its original charm.

Day 4: Loop ride Calella de Palafrugell – L’Escala – Calella de Palafrugell
Route: 82 km
Accomodation: Hotel Sant Roc

Today is a loop ride discovering the inland of the Empordà region, where the famous artist of Dalí use to live. It’s a flat land, with agricultural field and plenty of medieval villages, with its Romanic churches in the center. On the north we will reach L’Escala and Empúries, with his archeological site in front o the sea, where we can discover the Greck and Roman ruins dating from 600BC, the gate away of the classic cultures to the Iberian Peninsula.

Day 5: Calella de Palafrugell – Girona
Route: 68 km

From Calella we start north through Palafurgell, then east to La Bisbal de l’Empordà, famous city for its pottery museum and its medieval castle. Finally you will climb up to the Sanctuary of Els Àngels as a “happy end”, with spectacular views. You’ll finish the route in Girona, where you can have dinner one of the good restaurants downtown.

Departure or extra night.
